MORE HISTORY

Sometime in the mid-1960s the family built the first building on the current site.  A 50x40 foot cement block building was located where the east end of the store is now.  This new family business endeavor was Conner's I.N.S. (Independent Neighborhood Store).

In 1970 Johnny and his new bride Rauna moved home to become partners in the business and give John Sr. and Bernice some well deserved time off.  In 1975 the new building was built (a 50x100 foot metal building) and the store was re-named Conner's Cape Hatteras Supermarket. Business grew and in 1981 Johnny and Rauna bought out his parents and became sole owners of the business.  In 1983 they bought the old cement block building which at the time was housing Conner Lead and Lure and the B and M Beach Mart.  Later that year they added the last section to the existing structure, becoming the building you see today.

In 1994, Johnny & Raunaís oldest daughter Angela and husband Neil Tawes moved home so that her parents could retire.  She was followed in 2002 by her sister, Becky, who was married to Travis Salyers in 2007. The family welcomed Beckyís new husband to the business.

Three generations of Conners and their spouses have operated the business.  It is a rarity in todayís world to have a third generation small business.  We all feel honored to carry on what John and Bernice started.  We hope one day their great-grandchildren will continue the tradition.
